VERY RARE!! 1930s Stern Brothers NY Deep Chocolate Brown Full Length Sheer Negligee Nightgown with Ecru Chantilly Lace Size Small

SO RARE! Sexy 1930s sheer Stern Brothers New York dark chocolate brown negligee with so many incredible details! Three spaghetti straps front and back are braided at the shoulders ecru Chantilly lace applique' at bodice that finishes with two whimsical lace tassels at the deep V decolletage. Even deeper V in back! Additional fabric panels have been inserted into both side seams to create this gown's dramatic sweep. Rolled and hand-stitched hemline. Hand detailing apparent everywhere.

Earlier lingerie from Stern Brothers are in the collections of museums across the world, including MOMA. Although I am unable to absolutely confirm it, based upon my research, I believe this gown may have been "Handmade by Velma."

Founded in 1867, Sterns NY remained in business for 130 years. It was a family business and for decades family members filled the many positions in the store. However, Robert (1888-1954), the son of founder Issac Stern, changed his last name to Stearns and founded the investment bank Bear Stearns in 1923.

In 1913, Stern Brothers moved uptown and built their flagship store near Fifth Avenue and West 42nd Street across from Bryant Park. The new store had nine floors and catered to the "Carriage Trade" and had a separate entrance for customers like the Goulds and Astors. Since the store was near the Theater District, many up and coming stars worked in the store.
